From what I can find, when you need to go beyond 3 meters, then you get in the territory of the thunderbolt optical cables, which get expensive in a hurry.

Ah, that explains the huge price jump in the longer ones. I wondered what the deal with that was.

So I wonder if there's an advantage to going optical for a shorter run?

That's less than 10 feet, if you are OK with the length.
Kanex and Startech also sell 3 meter thunderbolt cables, a little higher price, but you can look at them through Amazon.com.
