Hey guys so I'm in the market for a new MacBook Pro. I'm currently on a late 2011 model and it's just not up to par anymore. I'm not looking to buy newer models for financial reasons. As the title states, I'm looking for recommendations! I'm currently a computer science major and am wondering what model/year you guys find the most reliable or simply liked the best. I've only ever owned this late 2011 model so I haven't kept up on what the other models really have under the hood.

That's one of the newer models and out of my price range. I don't need a touch-bar. I was looking more for a recommendation on older models and where to find them.

Just saw the price dropped on the base model. This is a frickin deal. No tax, total 2,099 for the latest tech. If you add tax to something else you are looking at I'm sure it's in this range. Why not get the best? This model is outperforming the i9 due to thermal limitations.

Just placed an order myself.

Well that leaves the 2015 model if you don't want a newer model with TB (if you want the 15" model). Those prices can be up there, I've seen them on eBay and Swappa in the 1,500 range (some at 1,200 and others at 1,700). I think Apple may have the 15" 2015 on refurb but those are closer the the 1,700 range.

If you want the 13" you can buy the non-TB version right now though it still has the butterfly keyboard.

You're right. If I do get the best out right now it'll have solid resell value in a couple years and I could upgrade much easier than if I owned an older model. Considering my late 2011 15" pro lasted me 6.5 years after buying it brand new I do believe buying new is worth it. I just have to find a way to come up with the cash lol.

The TB looks fun, honestly. If I had the cash sitting around I'd say f-it and just buy the mid 2018 model they just released. I was looking for a 2015 model but those were pricing higher than the newer models >_>. I guess everyone had the same idea.

I'm also a student so is there anywhere that gives a decent discount that you guys know of? I know it'll only be like $300 or so but that's still something.

Yeah...the link I posted. It's 300 off for a total of 2,099 with no tax. Best deal you are going to get. Effectively like 1900 bucks when you account for tax savings.

What spec is your 2011? If it's still factory, an SSD and RAM bump would help majorly.

I have a 15" 2015 that I will be selling soon. Probably not till the middle or end of the month. I had not looked at what I would price it at yet since I hadn't gotten there but if you think you are interested PM me.

I found several refurbished MacBook Pros going for as little as $1099 from Apple. You can check the link below

Apple Care + is also available for them as well.

There is allegedly a new model coming this month in the lower end of the price range. Seems like it would be worth waiting for specs.

The major issue with mine is that the dGPU (Radeon chip) died on me. The whole "radeon gate" topic people raved about for a while. I fixed it with the linux console trick by deactivating it through a bootable linux disk and had it run purely off the iGPU (Intel graphics). Just recently my HDD gave out so, to me, it isn't worth replacing the HDD with a SSD and having to go through all that trouble to deactivate the dGPU again. I think it's just time for a new one.

I'll check their website again. I remember looking before and didn't see anything that cheap.

Any news on when this is supposed to be announced? I just watched the keynote today and nothing about a new MacBook Pro was mentioned. I'd be very interested in that option if the specs are right.

Nobody knows. People think it might happen in October since there should be an update for the iPads as well as this rumored 13" Air/rMB replacement. It won't be a MBP though, but may be enough for what you need.
