Like the title says, but I also would like to know if I need antivirus for mac? I don't visit porn sites, torrent sites, or "free anime/TV/etc" streaming sites, but obviously you can come across malware or viruses in places other than those. How necessary is it to have antivirus?

And then of course, the title of this thread: Are there any recommended apps/downloads for mac?

thank you guys

Welcome to the dark side!

First off I would not recommend any kind of antivirus. It tends to cause more problems on a Mac than it is worth. As long as you practice safe computing you should be safe. Which looks like you already do.

Only software I would recommend would be Carbon Copy Cloner which has already been mentioned. I use it in addition to Time Machine for backing up my Macs as it clones my HDD instead of just backing up my files and apps.

As you become more familiar with your Mac, you will know which apps will suit your needs. This is why I tend not to recommend a lot of apps.

Onyx, for monthly or quarterly cleanups
Cleanmymac 2, I actually grown quiet fond of, but I think it's a bit expensive (I bought it in a software bundle, so no idea)

oh yes, no need for antivirus as firedept mentions it's more hazzle than worth it.

the rest is kind of built in ;)

You could go to the Mac App store and pick the category called something like "New to mac" or "Essentials for mac" it'll give you a hint of what you might want.
