My siblings have one 13" 2013 rMacpook Pro and one 15" 2012 rMacbook Pro and both their external USB 3.0 drives eject themselves. They live abroad so I can't get my hands on the Macs to help them.

The 13" has an Express 2.5" USB 3.0 Hard Drive Enclosure from OWC, and the 15" has a brand new HGST Touro Mobile Pro 1TB. I see form other threads that many people have the same issue with other USB 3.0 drives.

Can the issue be fixed?

Can someone recommend a 7200rpm external USB 3.0 HD that works flawlessly with these two rMacbook Pros?

I like the LaCie Rugged and the Western Digital Passport for portable hard drives.

There's nothing wrong with those drives per se, it's a bug in OS X that appears to have been introduced in 10.8.5.

Are they running 10.9.3 yet?

Are they both using the same make/model of external drive?

No, the 13" has an Express 2.5" USB 3.0 Hard Drive Enclosure from OWC, and the 15" has a brand new HGST Touro Mobile Pro 1TB. My siblings don't live in the same country, so they unfortunately have not been able to test each other's drives.

I also have the Lacie rugged and primarily use WD externals.
The Lacie rugged worked great with my 2013 13" Macbook Air, I never noticed any random disconnects or self-ejecting.
I later replaced the internal drive with a Samsung 840 Pro 128GB SSD and now this little external is quick. Very quick.

Now even after saying I never experienced self-ejecting with that Rugged drive, I do have 1 WD 2TB drive that will self eject but this is the 1st WD I've had that did this since the 1st WD 1TB drive I bought in 2007. I now have 10 @ home and about as many at my offices.

but that's just brand preference for me.:)

Are they ejecting randomly or only after the Macs have been put to sleep?

I can only recommend portable drives of which I have a 1tb wd, 1.5tb SG, and a 2tb WD. The WD's in general are much quieter, but none have any issues with ejecting.

Just a thought but if this was a drive issue surely you would get the "drive not ejected properly" message - so this would indicate the OS is ejecting them, or thinking it is being told to eject them.....

Samsung 840 EVO 1TB SSD sitting in an Inateck enclosure that does UASP. Read/write speeds are the same as the internal SSD, 400MBs+.

For a spinning HD, put a HGST 1TB traveller 7200rpm in the enclosure.
