I read a short article recently which stated that you could use garage band to record LP's for converting into digital format. I can't see any way of using GB for doing this and repeated requests to the author for clarification and additional information went unheeded. I'm not sure this is possible, but if it is I sure would love to know how to do it. Anyone know anything about this possibility?

Thank you.

Yup, I use Audacity & can highly recommend it. It's free, so no excuse not to.

Mind you, you'll need a phono preamp like this Project Phono Preamp

Most people use Audacity for that. I've not heard of anyone using Garageband.

I have a passing knowledge of Audacity although I've never used it. I am not necessarily adverse to installing it, but I figured I'd avoid installing anything I don't need to (maybe just a bad aftertaste from Windows), and if GB could be used for the task, then I wouldn't need to. I too had not seen anything anywhere else about using GB for this purpose but then, I'm new enough to Mac's that there are a lot of things I've not heard.

As far as the hardware goes, got it covered. Got an HK 330c receiver that takes the phono input, boosts it and then output's it to the Mac. Old but will do the job nicely.

Thanks for the input so far, ya'll.

I have used GB to record from LPs; it works fine. However, I only do a track at a time. I don't believe that GB has any features to automatically detect song endings and produce individual tracks.

If you only want to do a track once in a while, GB can be a good app for it (I like working with GB better than Audacity for most things). However, it's probably not the best for doing entire LPs, especially if you have a bunch you want to convert.

What GB settings need to be made or changed to do this? I know I need to change the input type in System Preferences to Line instead of Mic, but what settings do I need to look at and change in GB to have it use the line in? And is the default mode for GB stereo or mono? If mono, how to I address that to make it stereo?

Thanks.

I'm not at my computer now, so can't give exact steps. Basically, you just need to create a Basic Track. In the track, you select your inputs, which in this case would be something like Line In (stereo). It will then record a stereo track.
