record via MacPro digital input?

I am moving from an old Boss standalone daw to my new MacPro. I was thinking about getting an RME FF 400--but I don't really need many inputs or other options. I usually record just one track at a time (guitar/bass/vocals).

Would it be possible to bypass buying a firewire interface and have a signal path like: rnp to lucid ad converter into the MacPro's optical input?
