My friend is looking into buying his first mac. He plans to record/edit/mix his band's music. They have a hardcore sound mostly, if that is any help. I'm guessing he's on a tight budget, as we are students in high school. Any recommendations? Desktop or laptop, either way is fine. Money is of importance, though. And nothing too powerful, just enough bang for his buck.

Since performance for the buck is an issue, a portable is out of the question.
He should get a used DP 1.25GHz G4, or, alternatively, the small (1.6) G5. Beware of the "loud fan MDD models" they screw ambience not only while recording - you can't do a dencent mixdown nex to them, they're humming so loud.
As to audio I/O, I don't have much experience with USB audio. I'm using a 8 in/out Firewire Audio interface (the exellent MOTU 828), but that's clearly beyond the guy's limit, I think.
