I understand we can record high-res video from the iPhone 17 Pro to an external drive. Can we do this to a thumb drive? Does the drive have to be USB3, or can it be USB2? Anything else I should be aware of before buying an external drive for this purpose? Thanks in advance.

Depends on the format & frame rate.

For 4k 60Hz, you need a drive capable of at least 220 MB/s

For 4k 120Hz, at least 440MB/s

Functionally there's no difference between a "thumb drive" and a SSD. Just need to look at the speed.
