Recording onto DVD from Sky+ box is 4:3 on my mac

Any ideas?

I'm currently freeing up space on my sky+ box and am recording stuff i want to keep onto DVD. I am using a sony dvd recorder and have the sky box coming through on L3 (direct TV recording) i think?

Records no problem - however when i want to watch it on my MBP it comes up not in widescreen but as a box picture with two black bits on either side, 4:3 ratio i think they call it.

Any suggestions on how to remove this?

or use VLC, the you can crop or adjust the aspect ratio.
