recording real instruments in Garageband

Hey everyone, I've been able to record my yamaha s90es straight into garageband. I'm trying to record with my bass guitar and nothing is happening. Does it need to go through a pre-amp?

Pretty sure you do assuming it's got passive pickups. I think it may work with active pickups but don't quote me on it. But I'm quite positive you need a preamp of some kind. If you have a bass amp you could try to use headphone out or something.
