my MBP is in the apple store being worked on. i need to get a file for work from my MBP. i use time machine for back up. can i boot another computer using my time machine back up and recover the file i need? and what is the process......thnx

boot another computer, explore the time machine, find the mbp's backup and double click it, it should then open as a mounted disk. Then you can browse

i've never recovered anything from time machine before. the file i need is in documents - should i just be able to boot the TM backup with another computer, open documents, and copy and paste the file onto a memory stick? thnx

Yep, as i said, turn the other mac in, open up the time capsule which normally appears on the left side when you open the finder

Just find your MBP's time capsule backup double click it and it then mounts as a disk image you just browse it.
