2013 Macbook Air 256GB SSD. Somehow the SSD got corrupted to the point with the following behavior

- primary partition boot bars goes forever (macOS Sierra)
- recovery partition boots up but primary partition doesn't show up. diskutil app spins forever trying to list storage elements
- primary partition doesn't show up in target disk mode (connected via thunderbolt to another MBA)
- option key during startup does show both recovery and primary partition

Thought the SSD was bad so bought another SSD for replacement. But since partitions shows up under option key, I thought maybe there is a way to recovery this SSD. I did the following and got it to work.

- booted OSX via external USB disk
- fired up terminal
- ran this command "diskutil eraseDisk JHFS+ Emptied /dev/disk1" (disk1 was my SSD)

Then the SSD behaved properly again. Can be seen by diskutil app, target disk mode etc. Loaded macOS Sierra and everything is back to normal. Not sure what caused the corruption to begin with.
