Recovering emails from Thunderbird

I have many 'already viewed' emails on my gmail account. Is there a way to download them all again with Thunderbird so that I may sort them into folders?

Any help would be much appreciated?

Also, who prefers the original 'Mail' compared with Thunderbird?
