Recovering IMAP emails with time machine

I've had conflicting responses regarding whether emails that are fetched using IMAP can be restored with Time Machine. I did follow these instructions but did not have success. There is an alternative option though I am seeing discussed in forums, apparently the emails might be locally cached in a more discreet location? Does anyone have experience with this?
