Recurring BBOD on iMac G5 20' Ambient Light

Hi,

I am having recurring BBOD on my iMac G5 20' Ambient Light.

I am running 2GHz PPC with 1 GB RAM.

OS is OS X 10.4.11 (Tiger) will all the latest updates.

I have tried to check HDD permissions and performed HDD repair and nothing was reported.

I suspected a HW issue (perhaps HDD) but I can't rule out a SW issue.
I have tried created a new account but the same problem remains.

It maybe hanging after period of sleep mode... But I can't say for sure.

I am good in IT but relatively new to Mac, any idea how to debunk this crazy BBOD?

The hell is a BBOD? If you're having freezing issues or hanging, which it kinda sounds like, more than likely is a failing/failed hard drive. Repairing disk permission won't do anything if it's failing. I'd replace the drive with a new 7200 RPM and at least 32MB cache. Also, another 1GB of RAM won't hurt. If it's freezing to the point of needing a restart, that might be logic board / caps.

BBOD = Beach Ball Of Death

It could be several things.
I'd check in this order:
1) Temperature - Get iStat Pro and see how hot it is inside and if the fans are working.
2) Failing hard drive.
3) Failing ram.

If you just boot it and leave it alone, will it eventually crash?
Can you cause it to crash by doing something(s)?

Thanks guys.

I heard weird noises coming from the HDD and decided that it was very likely failing.

I have just replaced it with a Seagate Barracuda 500GB 7200rpm (Cache 16 MB).

I also replaced the RAM with 2 x 1 GB (PC3200 DDR400).

Running like a charm so far...
