Hi,

I have a 2010 MBP that I put away for a while. I took it out and evidently the battery expanded and broke the track pad. It won't boot even when plugged in so I can't wipe the drive. The glass was already cracked so repairing it would be far more than it's worth. Should I remove the drive? How do I safely recycle it and where can I recycle it?

Thanks

If you have an Apple Store or Best Buy nearby they'll recycle it for you.

I'd take the internal drive out first.
Even if the rest of the MacBook isn't worth saving, the drive may still have use as a "scratch storage" external drive (you can get a cheap external USB3 enclosure for it).

Watch out!
When you open the back, the battery may even "enlarge" further.
Handle it with care -- it can be a fire/explosion hazard.

I recently discovered this exact same thing with my 2009 MBP! I was planning to remove the drive for security reasons, hadn't occurred to me that it might still be useful. Thanks for the terrifying warning about the battery! Maybe I'll wait for the OP to go first...

In the past, I have removed the internal hard drive for security/paranoia reasons (and destroyed it) and recycled the balance of my machine.
