I got one single vertical red line on my monitor straight after upgrading to lion OS. Was that the cause or is this a coincidence that my monitor just broke down at the same time?

Unfortunately its out of warranty. What can i do?

Coincidence. I'm afraid that's probably a hardware failure (of the screen). Nothing to do with Lion.

Pay for the screen to be replaced, or live with it.

...actually, when this happened to my wife's notebook, some judicious squeezing and twisting of the screen bezel brought the dead line of pixels back to life, for about ten minutes. It was a cheap PC notebook provided by her work (and due for replacement), so I had no compunction about being brutal with it. Obviously you risk damaging the screen further by trying things like this, I only mention it for the sake of completeness. Definitely don't try it with a glass-covered screen.
