I recently started getting a red/white horizontal line at the top of my iMac screen, which is the latest high end stock iMac with the M395. It basically happens when I let the computer sleep for a while. Usually it's just a matter of restarting the computer, but it's really starting to bother me. It basically started happening with 10.12.3.

Does anyone else have this issue?

Two other things: sometimes if I click on the mouse for a minute, it returns to normal and I don't have to restart the computer.

That being said, it won't connect to wifi out of sleep mode over the last couple of days. I have to turn wifi off then back on in order for my iMac to connect.

No one else has this problem?

Also it asked today to pair with the iPhone, which I have no idea why. Also using my Apple Watch to unlock the iMac doesn't work anymore.

Am I really going to have to take this in? The line doesn't show up unless the iMac is asleep for an extended period of time, so it may be a bit tough to replicate.

Just started happening on my iMac as well.

The weird thing is it actually went away; it hasn't happened for weeks. Couldn't say why.

Basically my iMac was having a bunch of issues for a few weeks, then they all quit at once.

Thanks.

It's weird that your post is the only reference to this I can find anywhere.

Going to take advantage of my warranty and take it in.

I have had my 27" 5K 3TB FUSION DRIVE 32GIG RAM replaced by apple. Why? Well several times I would shut down my computer I would have horizontal lines flash across horizontally the screen, colors where orange, black, white, red and it was usually just two colours, and one time it was green and white lines. This I would tolerate happening to my mac. I expect my iMac to be in a healthy condition and not break down with gentle care. I took it to Apple Store and they tested it and found the device was unhealthy so they swapped out the Logic board. I went in to get, and the same tech that tested it when I brought it in, was saying he reluctantly wanted to give it back to me. I took it home. Then a day or so goes by, more lines of color. I didn't do anything about it at first, then it occurred again a couple days later. This was Damn disturbing. I brought it in again to Apple, they kept it, and to make this long story short, they swapped out the logic board four more times, and I was going insane. I kept calling into apple to check on my loved iMac. So I kept insisting that it should be a quality product for close to 5 grand machine and its failing on the early of third year of ownership. I requested that the computer be replaced with a replacement. Well, I kept insisting, and defending consumer rights in logical sense, and Apple came through, they sent the return postage to the Fulfillment Dept. so I could send in my crap computer and then they sent me a brand new late 2015 Built to Order iMac 5K 32GigRam 3TB Fusion Drive, and I am happy with Apple and all the support I received, but let me tell you, it was a ****ing stressful time, my iMac is working fine so far, and I am pleased overly with Apple and their products and handling of sticky situations.

Yeah that sounds pretty tough for sure.

I definitely think GPU issues are the cause when something like this happens, but I'm hoping that it was something in software and that it won't happen again. I've never experienced anything like it tech wise, to where that many things go wrong, and then the issues go away.

peglegjack - Has your problem remained "gone away"?

ebsers - Did you take you iMac in to get checked?

I have the exact same machine, and the exact 100% same problem as your photo. Sometimes it sits 1 min with that screen, then bursts into life. Others i have to hold power button down to restart.

I'd also been getting of lot slow running, non responding programs and beach balls, which hasn't been fixed by doing a clean (non TimeMachine) install.

It is with Apple as we speak, no answer yet.

The Genius I spoke to seemed aware of the red line issue, but had never seen it before, considering that I can't find any other mention on the internet, seems pretty rare.

I started getting vertical lines on the screen as well the day before I took it in.

Thanks for the quick reply, much appreciated. I'm glad it's not just me, I thought I was going mad at times. I'll book it in for a visit too, it's still under AppleCare.

Out of curiosity, did you have any other problems, slow down, spinning ball etc?

I didn't notice any other slow downs, aside from it taking a bit longer than usual to wake from sleep.

I haven't been doing much on it recently so I am not really sure of any other issues.

Tried all updates, nothing is fixing this, so booked an apple appointment.

Picked up my machine last night. Apple couldn't recreate this issue but did find an unrelated audio software issue which they fixed. Going to see if the problem persists.

Yeah, honestly I can't explain why. I guess it wasn't an OS update in any case. I'm still taxing the GPU editing 4K video and playing a couple games. The reason why I would be reluctant to take it in now is because #1 it stopped happening and #2 like the OP said it would be hard for Apple to recreate.

What initially stunned me was that no one else seemed to be having this problem. Now it appears to be a little more widespread than I thought. Hopefully mine stays normal in any case.

I took my iMac into apple for an assessment. It failed their hardware test on the fusion drive, so that's what was causing my system problems and the beach balls.

He said that the lines across the top and refusing to wake from sleep was a known bug, but was fixed in the last mini update.

Still waiting on a call to say its ready to pick up, although they did say they'd do a full retest to make sure it was only the fusion drive and not anything else.

Mine seems to be taking long time to wake from sleep, is this one of the issues you were having?

The red line has gone away and I haven't seen any other display issues, but it's non-responsive for a minute or two when i try to wake it up.
