Reddit Leverages Foursquare to Bring Location Tagging Option to Mobile App

Reddit has updated its official app to include a new feature that allows users to add location information to posts, just like Twitter or Facebook.

The optional feature is powered by Foursquare and designed to be added to posts that might be enriched by location details, such as restaurant reviews or photography.

The change comes as part of a wider effort by Reddit to modernize its online community's interaction and bring it more in line with typical social media networks.

Other features recently added that work toward this end include the introduction of user profile pages and the ability to follow individual users. Earlier this year, Reddit also added a Popular Posts section featuring viral posts, top stories, and trending topics, to help increase discovery.

Version 3.0 of the Reddit app also introduces a change to the inbox tab, so that notifications appear all in one place, with messages in another. Additionally, the post button is now inline in the feed instead of cluttering the navigation bar.

I think the main utility of this is for subreddits like r/earthporn where people can upload a photo and be like "this is where it's from" and not necessarily about ad revenue. There are other ways reddit can obtain a user's location, and this isn't attaching exact GPS coordinates, but only whatever place you search for and add to a post (i.e. I could be sitting in London and submit a post tagged as being in Antarctica). I also imagine Reddit already knows where you're located based on the IP address of your device, and metadata from the photos being uploaded, if any. That said, I doubt many people were asking for this feature (much like the new user profiles).

Was initially annoyed when Reddit bought Alien Blue.

The initial official Reddit app paled in comparison. I tried it every so often but always went back to AB. But a few months ago I ditched AB and went with the official client. Still miss a few things from AB, but overall I like the official app now.

Need to give narwhal a proper try too, didn't like it when I tried it a while back - but no doubt that too has improved and seems to get a lot of positive comments online.

Narwhal is quite good, but I've found myself using the official client more and more as it improves (but then I have gold so I don't see advertisements on it). I still prefer Narwhal's swipe gestures for voting though. I also recommend checking out 'Readder for Reddit' which is a newer entry that's very well done.

I am more surprised people still use 4square. Ever since they got rid of mayorships and trophies I stopped using it. I still think stickers are stupid and the idea of splitting it into swarm is as bad as an idea as fb splitting into messenger. I was really hoping they would been out of business by now. Oh well.
