I saw the whole 24k kick but am not familiar with 24k. does redsn0w currently work with the 3GS or what do I have to use to unlock? or cant as of yet?

you will be able to VERY soon
they are packaging everything up into their tools so they work with 3GS
it shouldn't be long now, but you still have to wait
once you can jailbreak it, the unlock will also be available over cydia
so just wait a little bit longer...
