reduce size (memory) of iphoto library?

Hello,

my iphoto library seems bloated. i've got eight gigs of photos... for 4510 photos. it seems that iphoto really takes up quite a bit of room!

is there any way to minimize it? i've got cs3, love it, but just getting farmiliar with it. is there any program in cs3 that compares with the simplicity and light weight of picassa?
