Reduce window to fit lower resolution?

Hi there,

I got asked a question I really had no idea about. When a MacBook (any flavor) is connected to an external screen, it naturally assumes the resolution of that screen / projector, which is usually lower than the Air's.

Is there a way to reduce a window (here, it was a print dialog) when it's too big to show entirely without disconnecting the external projector?
