Do you know what rEFIt is? It is a customized UI that shows up when booting and holding Option. Also, I believe you are referring to a firmware password... I installed rEFIt on my white MacBook so I could use Linux. I trashed that idea, and put in my extra HDD that had OS X in the MacBook. The rEFIt menu did not show up.
