Reformat Hard Drive

I'm getting rid of my MacBook. Trying to reformat hard drive to original state. Inserting original Mac OS X install disk 1, but the computer just keeps trying to access the cd. Is this normal? It's been going on for about an hour. The screen goes to light gray, hear hard drive spinning, apple will appear in middle of screen, but then it just goes black and starts again. HELP

Not normal. Check your DVD for defects and cleanliness. Does the drive read other disks without problems?
