well no one seems to be responding to my other topic about my 1309 error message,

anyway i checked my WD mybook pro 500gb user manual and it confirms that the stock ms-dof formatting only allows a max of 4gb per each individual file. that doesnt work for me.

someone suggested reformatting to the Mac os extended, i went into disk utility and it had a bunhc of options for the mac os extended and i also dont know how to actually do the reformatting...

what format do i want for it?
the choices were

Mac OS extended (Journaled)
Mac OS extended
Mac OS extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled)
Mac OS extended (Case-sensitive)

and is there any risk that ill ruin my harddrive by reformating?

You want extended (Journaled).

On the left side of the window, click on the manufacturer's name for the external. (not the mounted name) Example: WD 2500JB External Media, not Jimmy.

Then click on the Partition tab near the top of the window. Setup your partition scheme as you like it (probably one big Mac OS extended Journaled) and click the Partition button (located on the bottom right). Any data on the disk will be erased.

This will not void your warranty/ruin your drive.
