Reformatting an old Windows HD

Hey i just recently purchased an enclosure to make a internal HD external via Firewire. I found a 80GB HD laying around my house from an old computer of mine. When i hook everything up my Disk Utility reads that there is a HD but its not correctly formatted. When i try to format it, Disk Utility will run for about 2-3 hours and then give me an error. I also try to partition it, and it will do the same thing. Any answers? You would be a life saver
