The way I am familiar with doing this, is using the disk utility, and the erase feature. What volume format should I choose if I want it reformatted in FAT32? I want the hard drive to be compatible with a windows machine as well which is why I ask. Is this even possible to reformat to FAT32 with the disk utility? Any help is appreciated! Thanks.

chose the MS-DOS File system and then it will be compatible with Windows machines, or you could just plug it into a windows computer and have that format it.

Another option and well worth the money is a program called MacDrive, which lets XP read OS X formatted disks. (I don't know if they have a version for Vista). I don't know how much you use each system, or how, but by using this set up you get to have Spotlight index your external for when you're using OS X. I believe with the MSDOS format this isn't possible.

good luck.
