Hi There,

I am trying to reformat my external FW HD as I have been having problems with it. However, when I try to reformat it, Disk Utility just seems to get stuck at "Unmounting disk" and will stay at this stage for hours until I quit out of it. When I try to manually eject the disk in Disk Utility, I receive an error that the disk could not be ejected because files are in use. However, to my knowledge i have no files open, and even when I load Disk Utility from the Snow Leopard install DVD, i am still unable to unmount the disk because it says files are in use.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can reformat the drive, or does it sound like a hardware problem with the drive?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
