refreshing dektop?

I have an image of a previewed file stuck on my screen. I tried to relaunch finder, though that didn't work. How do you refresh your desktop view?

Log out and back in.

I have a bunch of browser tabs open that I was hoping I didn't have to close, I think logging out will close them all?

Not in Lion or later. The whole point of the "Resume" feature, which some people violently dislike, is that you can restart and all apps will relaunch and load their windows/documents as a shutdown.
