Hey all - would anyone here know the approx. top shelf (from the factory) specs for the last year of the 17" mac pro? And for that matter, the last year it was produced (and perhaps what you feel it's worth today)?

I'm considering replacing my old white macbook - I'd like a 17" pro (factory refurb) for screen size - but they can run as much (or more) than one of the new rMBP's.

Would you guys opt for the larger display? Or the newer unit? I'm thinking most would opt for a brand new unit - but I don't know, I really like those big screens. Wish they still made the 17". In regards to usage - either would meet my needs in regards to power and storage.

Thanks for the input!

I appreciate the suggestion, do you know if that one is available in the Play (Android) store? I'm not seeing it, so I'm thinking it might not be.

My thoughts boiled down:

- $1800 is too much to pay for a 2-year-old refurbished machine.

- In spite of the reduction in screen size, the retina display is actually easier on the eyes than the 17" at its native 1920x1200 resolution. It's just a nicer display.

I had a 2010 17" and loved it, but I'm totally sold on the retina.

This. I went from a 17 to 15" retina and am more than happy. Don't even notice it after a couple of hours and it's a nicer screen.

Don't buy latest so called "greatest" just yet. Hold off till Oct 2014. Get the 17"MBP refurbished, you will not regret as it is what you are asking us to approve of anyways, so go for it, enjoy and all the best!!

I think it's fair to point to out that vpro is probably the world's biggest 17" MBP fan, so take that recommendation for what it's worth. ;)

Look at the signature above me for a look at a 'maxxed out' 17" MBP.

Personally, I'm running:

2.5Ghz Quad Core i7
1.25TB of SSD (250GB 840 / 1TB Evo 840)
1GB ATI HD6770
16GB DDR3 1600Mhz Kingston Cas 9 RAM
17" Anti-Glare HighRes Screen
Applecare until February 25th, 2015

I've never had a system in the past 15 years I've enjoyed as much as this one.
