I've been playing around for a few months with what I call a 'bridge' camera and I'm looking to graduate to a DSLR around Christmas with my remaining student loan! At the moment I'm looking at the D40x but really don't think I could afford full price.

Does anyone know any online refurb stores, preferably in the UK, but even in the US, that would offer me a slightly more student friendly price? Would you guys recommend waiting to purchase the D40x? DSLR technology doesn't advance THAT quickly, right?

Thanks for your help!

Adorama.com seems to have a good selection of refurbished bodies and lenses. Sometimes they get stock of previous generation refurbs, such as the Canon 20D, for pretty nice prices.

bhphotovideo.com has "open box" specials. I can't attest to how good of deals they have, but they're awfully reputable and generally provide their own warranty on goods that are no longer covered by the manufacturer.

As a student myself, I can attest that refurbs or pro-used camera gear is the way to go. I've used adorama's refurbs, fantastic quality, LNIB basically for the few lenses I've purchased. Other common sites that you should check out:

www.photo.net
www.photography-on-the.net/forum
www.fredmiranda.com

each of them have classified sections (you may need to register), there's a lot of great gear and you'll find users in the UK selling their gear.
