I'm looking at a LaCie hard drive that has been refurbished. It comes with a 90 day warranty.

If it has already failed and been refurbished, surely it has been all checked out, right? Would you trust a refurbished hard drive?

My highly biased opinion:
My experience with brand new LaCie has been defective HDD.
Refurbished will be no difference.

What is your favorite brand? I'm looking for a reliable that is the least expensive.

Again, I am highly biased. I always buy from OWC:

I believe you are looking for external HDD.

And I am currently considering the Western Digital ones:
