If one were to buy a refurbished MBP, is there any indication on the laptop that it was, in fact, a refurb? I don't mean any physical damage, I'm more referring to some sort of label. Maybe on the system specs near the battery? Or is it completely unidentifiable without the brown box (over the standard box)?

The serial number changes to a referbished batch

Apple can tell by the Serial Number. If you are looking at buying an item you suspect as being a Refurbished piece of hardware, ask the seller for the Serial # and you can inquire about it with Apple Support.
