Refurbished iPhone, won't restore

A few months ago I dropped my iPhone 3GS and shattered the screen, so my hubby bought me a refurbished one. Unfortunately, when I try to connect to iTunes, it says that the phone is in recovery mode and needs to be restored... but when I try to restore and update, it fails. (Right now it says "n/a" next to the software version, so I don't have any details on that.) Any tips, or am I screwed?
