is there downside to buying a refurbished mac book or mac book pro?

Aside from not getting the box, no. There are many more rants about new products than refurbished ones here, I've seen only one in all of my time here which was easily resolved.

Yeah I've heard only good things about refurbs, supposedly the quality control they go through is even more rigorous than for new ones. Some people have also reported getting extra ram in their refurbs!

I just got a BlackBook for my brother last week. It was essentially a new one repackaged in the brown box. Quite a bargain at $1099 compared to the AluMacBook.

Well worth it in my opinion.

I Jusat got a refurb macbook pro. It definately was not brand new, but I have no complaints with it. It only has one little scratch on the side (aboout 1 cm max) and everything else barring the laptop came in brand new sealed plastics/cable ties.

I would highly recommend getting a refurb for the savings...
