regarding connecting macbook pro to HDTV (resolutions)

Ok I have a 2011 15" macbook pro & a mini dp to hdmi adapter. My 26" hdtv supports up to 1080i.

Macbooks resolution is 1440 x 900 which is higher than my hdtvs resolution at 720p, when I change the tv to 1080i 1920×1080 then everything on the hdtv screen looks to small. Is there a way I can choose 1440x900 on my HDTV to match my macbook pro or would that not look good either at 26"? In system preferences my hdtv display resolution only goes up to 1025 x 576 but its set at 720p which is 1280x720.

While I'm not sure how to fix your issue, I can tell you why you're getting such an odd resolution: 1080i is an interlaced signal. Only half the image is refreshed every frame. The first frame will have every odd numbered line refreshed, the second frame will have every even numbered line refreshed. As far as I know, computers will not be able to produce an interlaced image...
