Region free for Hitachi GS23N DVD

I am looking for an updated firmware for my MBP's (new 2010) Hitachi GS23N DVD to support region free DVD.

Any suggestions?

Why is the firmware flasher to make my MacBook DVD player region-free, and thus to let me play DVDs again — hitachi gs23n sb03 rpc1 — only available for use within a WINDOWS environment??

I can't install Windows on this thing for the sole purpose of flashing my drive. That's ridiculous. I refuse. I want a MacOS-compatible firmware flasher for my drive. I am really surprised there isn't one in existence already, whether supported or unsupported.

As a last resort, what stock (i.e. bought from a store) internal DVD drives could I install inside the MacBook Pro 5.3 that could take the place of the hitachi gs23n sb03 and would be region-free by default...?

I think VLC will play any DVD without giving a crap about the region. Try it.
