Hi Everyone,

I just bought a new MacBook Pro two weeks ago. I haven't come across any mechanism for registering for warranty. Is it automatic, or is there a web page for doing so?

Thank you!!

it comes with a one year limited warranty which starts at the date of purchase/activation. if you're interested to add AppleCare+ (which extends the warranty to 2 more years, 3 in total) you can do that on apple's website.

It's not required to register any product for warranty coverage in the US. As long as you have your purchase receipt, the computer is covered for one year from the date it was sold as new.

I thought they automatically register the first time it connects to the internet while logged into an iCloud account.

As I remember it is not automatic, but there is a step where it asks if you want to register during setup.

Just bought a 2019 MBP 13 inch with 2 thunderbolt ports. Using the link provided by Weaselboy, after signing in using my apple id, the laptop is already registered under my devices. So in my case, it was automatic.

Do you really need a receipt? I thought they already track it by serial number. But maybe that is for devices bought from Apple?
I think it will depend where and how you bought it. For example, I bought mine using the Apple Store app for pickup at the local Apple Store, and of course the app is already logged in with my AppleID, so that MacBook is linked to my AppleID. But if you just walk in off the street and buy a MacBook, I don't see how Apple is going to show that it is registered to you unless you register it yourself.

When a MacBook Pro is turned on for the first time, it stores the time of the first use, and whenever it connects to the internet it's going to ping apple servers and record that as "activation date"

I don't see how that is really relevant here. The purchase date is when the warranty starts, and pinging Apple's servers (assuming that is true) is not going to register the device under your name.

Does the warranty not transfer automatically? In other words if the device is sold, I thought the warranty would automatically transfer to the new user because it goes with the serial number. As long the device was not reported stolen it should be good.

When I was selling my within AC MacBook Pro, I was told by Apple that if I didn’t cancel the AC for a refund it would go with the device to the new user.

I have always bought my devices directly from Apple...

I usually do too... and I think buying direct from Apple is the difference. It says right on that support page I linked earlier a receipt is required, but if you bought from Apple under your AppleID, I'm thinking they can see the purchase date (receipt) in their system, so there is no point in asking you to show it.
