I don't have the recovery partition on my Mac Laptop but wanted to reinstall the OS from scratch. Is it possible to get a reinstall image from Apple for free by providing a serial number or something?

10.6 (Snow Leopard) does not have a recovery partition, which was introduced with Lion (10.7). Use the installation disc that came with your Mac to reinstall the OS. If you cannot locate the disc, you can order a replacement disc for your model by calling Apple (800-767-2775 in the US).
