I was having problems with DVD player, stalling so I downloaded DVD Player 4.6 afresh from Apple.com and trashed the installed version including preferences hoping this would solve the problem. Unfortunately I can not now reinstall DVD player as the installer tells me I have a newer version of the application installed, however I don't, I binned it (and emptied the trash).

How do I get DVD player back on my Mac? VLC is all well and good but I want Apple DVD player too.

Check /Library/Receipts/ and see if you don't have a couple of DVDPlayer packs. Move these elsewhere (don't delete them just yet as you may move them back if the installer doesn't provide fresh ones). Then see if you get to run the installer...

I already thought of that and binned them too. unfortunately still no luck on the install, there must be some other previous install log that the computer is referring too, I can't find it though?
