My advice is to get a Firewire enclosure that you can put your new drive in (PATA/IDE), then format it with Disc Utility (make sure to set the Partition tab Option to Apple Partition Map), then use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone your current drive onto the new one. The advantages of this are (1) you can test-boot after the cloning to make sure it worked before going through the trouble of the transplant, and (2) you'll be able to put your old drive into the enclosure as secondary storage.
