I want to re-arrange my hard drives and do a clean reinstallation of OSX. Am I going to need to swap my ATI 2600 card back in or will I be able to do the reinstall using the 3870?

Actually...

IF it's the Mac & PC Edition it should work without physically swapping the cards back and forth - provided your not using an aged old version of Leopard you're installing. I did it the other day!!

Think about it...

If the card needs drivers inorder to operate, you wouldn't see the start up screen when you first switch on your Mac.

Yep. Any graphics card should at least do an unaccelerated mode to just get an image to the screen.

OS 10.0 never shipped with drivers for the Rage IIc, yet it ran on the Wallstreet and Lombard Powerbooks.

I'm getting ready to do this with 10.5.2, has anybody tried it with this version and the 3870 yet?

I think 10.5.2 is the first version to be updated for the 3870.

Even with older versions of 10.5 if you have problems booting after the install. You should still be able to boot in safe mode. Then run the 10.5.6 update from there. Or go to /System/Library/Extensions and delete all ATIRadeonX2000 kexts and reboot normally. You will just will not get any Quartz Extreme or Core Image support. Once you install the 10.5.6 update the updated ATIRadeonX2000 kexts will be installed.

I had problems reinstalling OS X after I had upgraded (replaced my broken x1900) with a nvidia 8800. My install disk didn't have the drivers and therefore couldn't do anything

I worked with just 10.5.2 although no acceleration until I installed the drivers. Update to 10.5.6 helped also. Thanks for that. :)
