I am looking for recommendations for a reliable dock to use with a M2 MacBook Pro in the office. Reliability - particularly with wake/sleep - is paramount. The MacBook will be used primarily in clamshell mode with a single 34" ultrawide (currently a 3440 x 1440 but may switch to a 5K2K). Ideally I would like it to be Thunderbolt 4 with appropriate power delivery (although is there a difference with a USB4 dock?) and it should have at least a gig ethernet port. Otherwise, an extra usb port or two would be nice but I don't need a million ports as there wont be a lot of accessories attached.

Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

Any cons that its Thunderbolt 3 instead of Thunderbolt 4?

Also, I've seen some posts reference that some ethernet chips don't play as nice with Mac and/or some are USB and some are PCIe based. Can anyone explain what I should be looking for there?

Caldigit TS4 would be my recommendation.

Rock solid on my 14" M1 Pro MBP. Ethernet port reaches full gigabit speeds and has no stability issues. Has two downstream TB4 ports, a DisplayPort connector (which would be good for the displays you're talking about), audio ports including rear stereo out and a front mounted combo headset jack), USB-A and USB-C ports, and SD card readers (standard and micro).

I had an OWC TB4 Dock and it worked mostly fine, but sometimes its ethernet port would disconnect for no reason. And while it has three downstream TB4 ports compared with the Caldigit TS4's two downstream ports, it lacks USB-C data ports, and the front mounted TB4 input port and stereo-out ports kind of got in my way.

They both, however, work just fine with my two Studio Displays connected through them, giving me a single cable solution to my laptop.
