I'm looking to attach a hard drive to my router via ethernet (it doesnt have a usb port). All I want to be able to do is access files throughout my house without being tethered to my external hard drive on my desk and I only need, at most, 500gb of space.

Anyone have suggestions for a cheap ($90-125) external hard drive that fits these requirements and is reliable (i've read a lot of nasty reviews on amazon)? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Also, would it be possible to convert my current usb external hard drive to connect over ethernet (with some sort of ethernet-usb adapter) to my router?

synology is the one I have been using. it also contains pretty good ftp/http online server for data sharing.

the only ones i saw of that brand required you to buy a separate disk, which I dont want to do.

There are some one-drive Synology devices with 1TB drives installed (look in Amazon). However, they are more expensive than the budget you mentioned above. Look for the DS110j.

LaCie also has some desktop drives with ethernet that may work for you.
