For those of you who used MS or PC Dos back in the day. Remember the line editor that was included with the OS.

It was a line editor not a full text editor, well for giggles, I fired up my win7 VM and lo and behold, edlin still lives. They never got rid of the editor, image my surprise to see the little text editor, I used to use to write assembler code in DOS.

Similarly pretty much every Unix ships with ed. Even though it's there I hope to never need it. A system without even vi installed is quite a barren place.
 
I still use vi pretty much daily. Wouldn't touch ed though, not unless I really had to.
