A reminder to those who are picking-up a new iPhone at a store. If you have Stolen Device Protection enabled, disable it at home before you leave. If you don’t, you’ll have a 60-min security delay at the store.

It can be disabled at the store via the iCloud website.

Regardless, your advice is correct and people should disable it at home before going to any store.
 
Update: For those who don't disable it before going to the Apple Store, Apple Store staff have been instructed to initiate the restore using a computer.
