iPhone Reminders app icon - no badge notification icon?

At some point my reminders app stopped showing badge app icons for notifications. I've done a full restore of my phone and still have the problem. Every now and then the badge app icon will show up, but it seems random and almost always shows up later than the time the reminder was scheduled for. Anybody else? Any ideas? Thanks!

Edit: iPhone 6 and 5s both on 8.1.2

It's been pretty much like that since at least iOS 7. The badge will show up usually but often later than the time of a reminder. Sometimes it takes opening the app for it to happen other times even that might not do it until it happens on its own a bit later.
