Reminders, Notes not updating in background

Prior to Sonoma, I *think* I recall that the badge and data in Reminders and Notes would update in the background if the apps were not open similar to iOS/iPad OS. But in Sonoma, background sync rarely happens or takes it takes a long time. Anyone else noticed this?
