Remote App doesn’t show playback controls

Wondering if anyone has run into a case where the remote app on their Apple Watch isn’t showing playback controls?
I’ve seen this when doing media playback on my AppleTV, often, but not always, with Plex.
I can still nav around the app on the watch and using the controls that are present do navigate the AppleTV, but there’s just no play/pause buttons or functionality.

What’s interesting is if I pause the playback from my phone, which is working as expected, and then tap the blank empty screen of the watch in the remote app, playback will begin again…

Far as I know, the Remote app on the Watch never showed playback controls but tapping the main part of the screen should pause/play the video. Your best bet would be to use the Now Playing app. That has the playback controls plus skip/rewind 10 seconds, volume control with the Digital Crown (if audio is playing to an AirPlay speaker like a HomePod) and there is also a button to open the Remote app on there if you need it.
