Remote app + Siri Remote = Multiplayer?

I have the new Remote app (with game mode) paired to my ATV4 but when I attempt to play any multi-player games I find that both the Remote app and Siri Remote act as the *same* controller. Both are player 1 with no player 2, essentially. Surely there's a way to use an iPhone and Siri Remote to play some 2-player games? Am I doing something wrong?
